Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal was sworn in as a judge of the Madras High Court, on Thursday.
TN Governor K Rosaiah administered the oath of office to Justice Agrawal at a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan today.
Being the senior most judge, he assumed office as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, later. Earlier, Chief Secretary Sheila Balakrishnan read out the warrant of appointment in the presence of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy and others.
At the High Court, the Bench and the Bar accorded a warm welcome to the new Acting Chief Justice. Justice Agrawal said that he was aware that the Madras High Court had produced tallest leaders from the Bar. “But, much as the past achievements give us great pride, they cast a greater responsibility upon us to continuously lift those achievements higher.
We must ensure that the Madras High Court retains its pre-eminent position as a seat of justice and for that both the Bench and the Bar will have to work together,’’ he added.
Justice Agrawal was born on May 5, 1953 in a family of lawyers and jurists. He graduated from Allahabad University and enrolled himself as an advocate in 1976.
His father Raja Ram Agrawal was the former Advocate-General of Uttar Pradesh and a senior advocate of Allahadbad High Court.
