Looking to clear the air on the recent death of an engineering student from Sivagiri, which had triggered protests by her college mates in Coimbatore owing to suspicion that she was raped and murdered, Superintendent of Police R Ponni on Thursday said her death was a case of self-immolation.
“The probe revealed that she committed suicide. After this is confirmed by one more report that is awaited, the reason for the death would be made public. It is not murder,” the SP told Express. Nandhini, daughter of Nallasamy of Sivagiri had gone home for the Pongal holidays. On January 19, her parents saw her off on a bus to the hostel of a college in Coimbatore, where she was pursuing a CSE course. But, her half-burnt body was found on the GH Road in Sivagiri the next morning.
Later, it came to light that before her death, she had reached the hostel and handed over a bag to a guard, asking him to give it to a friend. The bag had a 47-page love letter to a classmate. But, after the boy asserted that he was not involved in a relationship with her, police concluded that her death was the fallout of a one-side affair.
