A pall of gloom descended over the Pondicherry University following the news of demise of Madanjeet Singh, former diplomat and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 2000.

Madanjeet Singh (88), passed away in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in the south of France, on Sunday, after a heart attack.

The Central University has two institutions, UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asia Regional Cooperation (UMISARC) and Madanjeet Singh School for Green Energy Technologies, established with the help of the South Asian Foundation (SAF), set up by Madajeet Singh, who was keen on providing education to the youth across South Asia.

Madanjeet Singh was born in Lahore on April 16, 1924.

He graduated from the Lahore Government College and then pursued his MSc in Technical Chemistry from the Italian Institute for Middle and Far-East in Rome.

Singh was an Indian Foreign Service officer from 1953 to 1982 and served in various countries across the globe.
