Union Minister V Narayanasamy is hopeful that the meeting of the Cauvery Supervisory Committee would take a decision in favour of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in its next meeting.

Addressing reporters on Sunday, he said Karnataka had refused to accept Tamil Nadu’s demand for the release of 10 TMC Feet of water citing inadequate water storage in its reservoirs. The committee had sought clarifications from the Karnataka government on the stock of water, the available area of cultivable land and the amount of water Karnataka could release in June.

“I am hoping for a favourable decision for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in its next meeting,” he said.

Narayanasamy said it was not clear as to how much of Pondicherry and Karaikal  region’s share was sought by the government, which was represented by Chief Secretary in the meeting.

Narayanasamy informed that he had requested Union Defence Minister A  K Antony to ensure the safety of Indian fishermen in the sea bordering Sri  Lanka, following which Coast Guard ships have been deployed for patrolling in the area to protect Indian fishermen.

He added that a helipad was constructed in the coastal town of Nagapattinam and a helicopter had also been stationed there for saving the Indian fishermen in distress.
