13-year-old sleeps under lorry, run over by vehicle

A 13-year-old boy whose idea of siesta was under a stationary lorry, was killed instantly when another speeding lorry rammed the parked one before plunging into the service lane, 50 ft below in Tambaram-Maduravoyal bypass road, in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The lorry laden with iron rods was driven by Ganapathy of Panruti. When the lorry came near Irumbuliyur, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the parked lorry killing Arun of Irumbuliyur. The lorry came to a halt after it plunged into the service lane.

The body was moved to Chromepet GH where Ganapathy is also being treated. Luckily, there was no other vehicle in that service lane.

Teen remanded

The Madipakkam Police on Tuesday remanded a teenager in judicial custody after he stoned his higher secondary school junior Hariharan to death on Monday.

Police said Hariharan(17), a resident of Bharath Nagar in Keelkattalai and a Plus-2 passout of Holy Family Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School, was killed after the stone hurled by Ashok Kumar (18), who finished Plus-2 last year, hit him in the temple right in front of the school.

Ashok Kumar who was picked up by the police told them that he was confronted by Hariharan when he was going to play cricket with his friends.  “Hariharan attacked me when I was unprepared and I fell on the ground on Madipakkam Road. I picked a stone and hurled it on him only with the intention to injure him,” Ashok Kumar said.

His statement was recorded and he was subsequently produced before a court which remanded him in judicial custody and the accused was lodged in Puzhal prison.

Houses burgled

In two different incidents reported in the city, burglars decamped with about 50 sovereigns of gold in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The burglars struck at the house of Damodaran, a cheque collection agent and resident of North Jegannathan Nagar in Villivakkam, when the family members were sleeping on the terrace. The thieves decamped with 19 sovereigns and `30,000 in cash.

In another incident, which was reported in Red Hills, 30 sovereigns of gold were stolen from the house of Mariappan, a tea shop owner.

Rs 10 lakh stolen

A retired government official lost Rs 10 lakh that was kept in his car at Ashok Nagar, on Tuesday.

Police said Vishnu Prakash, (60), a resident of West Jones Road in Saidapet, had withdrawn Rs 10 lakh from a bank in Ashok Nagar. He parked the car near a hotel in Ashok Nagar and went out to buy food. When he returned, he found that the car’s window was forced open and the cash bag was missing.

SSI assaulted

A three-member gang allegedly assaulted a 56-year-old Special Sub-Inspector (SSI), Baskaran and a member of the Home Guard Personnel, Prabhakaran late on Monday, when the duo was on two-wheeler night patrol duty.
