In one of the largest seizures of ganja in recent times, police found 234 kilograms of the banned substance, worth Rs 28 lakh, buried in a private garden at Chinnalapatti village near Natham Taluk on Tuesday. Police arrested the landowner and are searching for three more persons.
Nithyanantha Sinha, DIG of Narcotics Intelligence Bureau-CID, said that a police team led by inspector Manikandan checked the area after receiving a tip-off. “We found 234 kg of ganja in packets buried under ground. The landowner Selvam (46) tried to escape but was caught,” the DIG revealed. He added that the ganja, was brought here from Andhra Pradesh and was meant to be sold in Dindigul, Theni district and Kerala.
Police are also searching for three brothers- Seenivasan (43), a school teacher at Chinnalapatti Government HS and Selvakumar (39) and Ravi (38), - who are believed to be involved in the smuggling network. Sinha said that the trio would be arrested in the next few days.
3 smugglers held
Three persons were arrested for allegedly smuggling teakwood at the Kodaikanal Bus Stand on Tuesday. Police seized six kilogram of teakwood. Shankar (26) and two brothers-Gomathinayagam (27) and Kanagamoorthy (24) from Chempatti in Athoor taluk were arrested.
