On a day when the State assembly passed a resolution seeking a referendum on a Tamil Eelam, the city’s students continued with their protests, seeking an international independent inquiry into the genocide of Sri Lankan Tamils, on Wednesday.

As many as 150 students gathered in front of the All India Radio station on Kamarajar Salai and tried to lock the building to register their protest. They  also burnt an effigy of Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. Speaking to Express, Ilayaraja and Dhivya, coordinators of Students’ Federation for Freedom of Tamil Eelam, said the students plan to erase the words ‘India’ and ‘Centre’, and all terms referring to the Centre from name boards across the State.

Welcoming the resolution moved by the AIADMK government for Tamil Eelam, the federation urged the government to pile pressure on the Centre to take adequate action in this regard.

Responding to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s request to stop the protests, the coordinators said they would continue their stir until a similar resolution was passed in Parliament, seeking an international independent inquiry into the ‘genocide’ and to impose economic sanctions on Lanka.

Meanwhile, students from a city college staged a protest in front of the BSNL office while students of a private engineering college staged a road roko on GST road.

Caught recording

Meanwhile, a youth, believed to be a Lankan national, was picked up for questioning by the city police after he was caught recording a student protest at Kamarajar Salai on Wednesday.

An I-card in his possession gave his name as Neville Sudarshan (30).
