R Uma Maheswari, a resident of Mela Chinthamani in Tiruchy, has bagged the 202nd rank in this year’s civil services examination at the national level in her consecutive third attempt. A chemical engineering graduate, Maheshwari’s hard work and perseverance paid off rich dividends as she made the city proud.
“I had believed that hard work, dedication and perseverance would pay off some day...and it has! Whoever puts forth his or her best foot forward would definitely succeed one day”, Maheshwari said.
Speaking to Express, she dedicated her success to her parents and extended gratitude to the Manithaneyam IAS free coaching centre which is run by Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, where she underwent training for more than two-and-a-half years. “I wanted to serve people when I was studying at Srirangam Girls’ Higher Secondary School and that was my true ambition,“ she recalled.
After finishing her plus two from the Holy Cross Higher Secondary School in Tiruchy, she joined the Anna University in Chennai. After completing B Tech in Chemical Engineering, she joined in a leading organisation, but chose to answer her true ambition. “Though I had a placement with good salary, there was a longing in my heart as I had deviated from my true ambition. As that urge in me grew, I resigned from my job and joined the coaching class in 2010.
After rigorous preparation, I could finally succeed in my third consecutive attempt,” a visibly relieved Maheshwari said.
Since Maheshwari is presently based in Chennai, she has been making elaborate arrangements to visit her home in Tiruchy to celebrate the taste of success with her father Rajmohan, a businessman, mother Alamelu, a housewife and her younger brother Bala.
The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2012 was conducted on May 20, 2012. A record number of 5,36,506 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 2,71,422 candidates actually appeared.
A total of 13,092 of these candidates were declared qualified for the main written examination held in October, 2012 out of which 2,674 candidates were selected for the personality test conducted in March-April, 2013.
Haritha V Kumar from Kerala topped the civil services exam this year.
