With the private professional college managements making it clear that the students selected under the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) would not be allowed to attend third year classes of their respective courses pending due clearance, such students have been left with no alternative other than coming out on to the streets and agitating against the UT government’s inaction, said leader of the opposition and former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Vaithilingam demanded that the AINRC government take steps to remit the fees for the CENTAC-selected students, as their future was hanging in balance following the decision of the private professional college managements to seek full fee amount for courses this year.
Vaithilingam said that the UT administration had not reimbursed the fees for CENTAC-sponsored students for the past two years because of the financial crunch. The students were placed in a tricky situation as they could not approach banks for loans, as majority of them came from financially weak backgrounds and were incapable of furnishing guarantee for the loans.
Vaithilingam said that in the present scenario the students were facing the danger of being forced to leave their studies mid-way. He said that the private professional colleges had asked the students to remit course fee in full for the academic year, failing which they would have to face the prospect of paying huge fines.
Vaithilingam said that the Union Territory government should take steps to get its quota in post-graduate seats in private medical colleges. He demanded that the AINRC government come out with a clear stand on the regional reservation issue as admissions to the professional courses for the new academic year would begin in a couple of months.He demanded that the UT administration withdraw the power hike for domestic customers as it would burden the common man. He said that the hike would hit small businesses as well.
