The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has issued notices to the DGP and IGP (South) to respond to a petition seeking registration of a case against Union Minister of State in PMO N Narayanasamy for allegedly making offensive remarks against slain LTTE supremo V Prabakaran.

In his petition, a Madurai-based advocate C Ramesh alleged that the Minister had made a statement to journalists which had the potential to promote enmity between Tamil speaking Indians and non-Tamils.

The Minister had apparently described Prabakaran as a coward, who had used women and children as shield during the ethnic war in Sri Lanka. Further, he had said people who supported the LTTE were acting against national interests and must be “eliminated.”

Contending that these remarks were irresponsible and derogatory in nature, petitioner claimed that it had the potential to create ill-will between Tamils and non-Tamils. Hence, he had lodged a complaint with the IGP of South Zone on May 20 seeking registration of a criminal complaint against the Minister.

Since there was no response to his plea, he moved the court seeking a direction to the DGP and IGP South Zone to take action against Narayanasamy under Section 153 (A) of IPC (promoting enmity on the basis of religion or race).

Hearing the plea, a bench comprising Justices A Selvam and P Devadass issued notice to the DGP and IGP of south zone and adjourned the case to June 6.
