Residents of Ponni Nagar in Kasba, belonging to Ward 57 of the Vellore Corporation, have to walk on the sewage water that flows outside their houses due to discontinuous drainage lines in their area.

“Since the drainage line is not connected, the sewage water stagnates on either side of the streets,” said Velu, secretary of the Ponni Nagar Welfare Development Association.

Over 200 families have been affected by this problem. The residents also complained that the existing drainage lines were filled with plastic wastes and it overflowed on the road and stagnated on empty plots, posing health hazards to the residents in the area.

Apart from constructing drainage lines, the residents demanded to de-silt the existing drainage lines immediately.

Prior to this, the  residents had recently protested demanding the restoration of a canal running from Otteri and Sadhupperi to Kasba via R N Palayam. On Monday the residents also submitted a petition to Collector P Sankar during the public grievances meet.
