Construction workers demand aid

Activists of the Puduvai Manila Kattadakalai Thozhilalar Sangam took out a rally before submitting a 15-point charter of demands to the Chief Secretary here on Thursday.

N Viswanathan, one of the leaders of the sangam, said that they wanted the meeting of the Puducherry Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Board convened at the earliest. The meeting was reportedly not held for over a year.

The sangam demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for construction workers killed in accidents and Rs 3 lakh in case of natural death.

A sum of Rs 10,000 as financial assistance for  women before and after three months of childbirth was also sought.

AITUC Puducherry unit secretary, V S Abhishegam and leaders C Ravi, Chandrasekaran were among the workers representatives, who met Chief Secretary Chetan B Sanghi.
