Former DMK Minister Durai Murugan on Friday appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on the premises of the Vellore District Combined Courts Complex at Sathuvachari, in connection with the disproportionate wealth case filed against him.

Judge of CJM Court K Guruvaiah issued the order directing the former minister to appear before the court on December 3, to receive a copy of the charge sheet filed against him by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing (DVAC), Vellore. When the former minister walked in at around 10 am, he was accompanied by party cadre.

Additional Superintendent of Police of DVAC

M Balasubramanian, who was the then DSP of the wing, had filed a six-page complaint against  Murugan and his wife Shantha Kumari on November 23, 2011. In the complaint, the police officer had charged the minister and his wife of amassing assets to the tune of `1.40 crore, disproportionate to their known sources of income between 2007 and 2009.

On November 24, 2011, a team led by Balasubramanian conducted a raid at Murugan and his relatives’ houses, educational institutions and commercial establishments that were run by him and seized documents.

The former minister had filed a writ petition in a division bench of the Madras High Court pleading separate statements of the case for himself and his wife. However, the HC dismissed the petition.

Following that, the Vellore unit of the DVAC had filed a 2,000-page chargesheet along with 102 documents before the CJM court on January 3 this year.
