8.8L cases settled in day-long Lok Adalats held across state

As part of the National Mega Lok Adalat, nearly 8.8 lakh cases that involved an award amount of nearly `500 crore were disposed off in the courts of Tamil Nadu, including the Madras High Court, till 5 pm on Saturday.

An official release said the Madras High Court and its Madurai bench disposed of more than 300 cases involving an award amount of `18 crore.  The total number of cases disposed off across the State in various courts stood at 8,83,144 at 5 pm on Saturday with value of disposal touching `500 crore.

The release added that these numbers are expected to rise by another 4 lakh and `400 crore.

Interacting with the media here, Justice R Sudhakar of the Madras High Court elaborated on the rationale for the National Mega Lok Adalat.  “There are thousands of citizens who cannot afford the costs of litigation. In order to address their problems, the Supreme Court conducted the Lok Adalat across the nation, which has been a resounding success.”

Adding that the success achieved with respect to the quantum of cases solved was hitherto unforeseen, he said that such activities are expected to continue in the future. Big rush was witnessed in courts across Tamil Nadu as litigants used the opportunity to settle cases.
