The Salem District Collector was directed by the Madras High Court on Wednesday to consider a plea to grant permission to conduct the ‘Erudhattam/Erudhu Vidum’ programme during a festival at the Muthu Muniappan temple in Koodalur village in Salem district on May 3.

The first bench comprising Acting Chief Justice RK Agrawal and Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar gave the direction while passing the orders on a public interest writ petition filed in the court by S Vasu, resident of Koodalur village.

According to the petitioner, the temple was conducting the Erudhattam, a fighting of erudhus, every year.

After a ban on jallikattu was imposed by the court two years ago, the temple had been conducting the programme after obtaining orders to this effect from the Madras HC.

Hence the present writ petition, for a direction to the District Collector to consider his representation dated March 17 for holding the programme on May 3.
