The suicide of a 43-year-old man inside a temple here has caused disappointment among the devotees here on Friday.

Police said, Jayakumar, son of Simman alias Chinnasamy from Uppilipalayam in Coimbatore, hung himself from the roof in front of the Vianayagar idol in Sri Sakthi Vinayagar Alayam in Railway Colony, close to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office here, in the early hours of Friday.

Devotees shocked by the news of the suicide immediately informed the police, who recovered the body and sent it to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) for post mortem. Karimedu police filed a cased under 174 CrPc section and conduct further investigations.

Since Jayakumar hails from Coimbatore, police could not immediately find out the reason why the victim, who was found with inner garments, came to the temple and chose the place to end his life. No other belongings of Jayakumar was found near the spot.

One of the devotees said that the victim came to the temple and started worshipping the Lord by singing devotional hymns before he took the extreme step. He was also appe aring mentally disturbed.

Normally, the priest used to open the sanctum sanctorum by 8.30 am. But the gates won’t be locked and can be opened for worshipping purposes. “We don’t know why the victim came here and hung himself in front of the God,” wondered S Kandasamy, secretary of the temple. The ceiling is 10-foot high and a man like Jayakumar, who would be 5 feet, could not reach the roof easily. But he had used an iron wire to strangulate his throat and had jumped down from the ‘Holy Peedam’, he added.

Karimedu police have registered a cased under 174 CrPc section and further investigations are on.
