The student was Suriya Prakash (16), son of Kandhasamy, who is a security man in Annamalai University. They were residing on the first floor of a house on Govindhasamy Street.

On April 21, the boy went missing after he reached home from tuition. His parents and relatives started searching for him but in vain. The parents tried calling him up on his mobile phone and the person  at the other end demanded Rs 25 lakh in cash for the release of Suriya Prakash. The boy’s parents lodged a police complaint.

On the night of April 23, Suriya Prakash’s body was found in a gunny bag on the ground floor where a hotel was running. That Suriya was murdered and his body was in the gunny bag came to light after residents in the area, sensing a foul smell emanating from the hotel, complained to the police.

The police went to the hotel, found the body and interrogated the hotelier Jawahar Babu(32). On Saturday, Jawahar Babu  confessed that he tried to have sex with the boy while his wife was away. When the boy refused, he attacked him with a log, killing him on the spot. Jawahar packed the body in a sack and kept it in his hotel. Jawahar was arrested and lodged in jail after being produced in court.
