COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City police have seized over `1 crore in cash from a Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) vice-president on Wednesday evening at Saibaba Colony. The cash, which was being transported in a car without proper documents has been handed over to the Income Tax Department.

According to sources, the police control room received a call around 6 am on Wednesday claiming that ‘hawala’ money is being transported in a particular car at Saibaba Colony.

Acting on the tip-off, police intensified vehicle checks in Saibaba Colony. Police intercepted a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at a check post near Eru Company bus stop on Mettupalayam Road. The vehicle belonged to TNCC vice-president R Radhakrishnan (60), a resident of Peelamedu. While checking the vehicle, police found unaccounted cash amounting to more than `1 crore in the vehicle. Immediately, police brought the vehicle and the cash to the Saibaba Colony police station.

Meanwhile, Radhakrishnan, who is also involved in real estate business, told the police that the cash was obtained through a real estate transaction and he could produce proper records.

Since the amount was huge, the Saibaba Colony police informed the Income Tax Department.

“As the amount seized was huge, we have informed the I-T Department and handed the cash over to them,” said Saibaba Colony Inspector of Police (Law and Order) Salairam Sakthivel.
