As the situation of water scarcity is worsening in the Fort City, residents are becoming aggressive in preventing private vendors from sinking deep bore wells or selling water.

The residents are apprehensive that large scale extraction of water from ground water table would deplete the availability of water. They are perturbed that vendors were exploiting the locals by hiking the price of water often.

On Tuesday, a large gathering of residents of K K Nagar blocked a water tanker operated by a private vendor, demanding the government to ban such large scale extraction. They pointed out that vendors had sunk many borewells in ward 53, because of which the water level in wells went down. .

Similarly, residents of Poottuthakku village near Arcot were up against a private vendor extracting water and selling the same in Vellore city. The residents alleged that the vendor was extracting around 50 truck loads of water every day, which had badly affected the water availability in the locality. They wanted the administration to ban water extraction from the region. After the intervention of police, they withdrew the agitation.
