Cop Shows Up Drunk in Court

VILLUPURAM: A 54-year-old special sub-inspector was remanded in Ulundurpet sub-jail for disrespecting court after he appeared before it in an inebriated state, here on Tuesday.

The Magistrate also directed the police department to initiate disciplinary action against the erring official.

Sources said that Arumugam (54) had come to testify before the Tirukovilur court in connection with an assault case. However, seeing him sway and not being in full control of himself, Magistrate Shanmugharajan ordered his removal from the court and directed that he be subjected to a medical examination.

Later in the day, the doctors at the Tirukovilur government hospital confirmed that Arumugam was drunk during the proceedings. Based on the report, the magistrate sentenced the SSI to 15-day remand and directed the police department to initiate steps for his dismissal for contempt of court.

Sources said that Arumugam had a history of reporting to duty drunk and had faced departmental action several times owing to his drinking habit.

Arumugam was attached to  the Panruti police station in Cuddalore.
