COIMBATORE: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with the model syllabi for 19 undergraduate courses as part of its efforts to implement the uniform Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) across universities in the country.

“Because of the diversity in the evaluation system followed by different universities in India, students have suffered acceptance of their credentials, at times, across the university system as well as employment agencies. In order to mitigate this, UGC formulated guidelines for adoption of uniform choice-based credit system across all universities,” said UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu.

“This would ensure seamless mobility of students across the higher education institutions in the country as well as abroad. The credits earned by the student can be transferred and would be of great value to the students

in the event of their seeking migration from one institution to the other,” he said.

The UGC constituted a committee of experts to prepare the model syllabi for undergraduate courses, which has now prepared the draft model syllabi for 19 courses in subjects like history, economic, psychology, physics, chemistry, biomedical sciences, botany, zoology, anthropology, microbiology and forensic sciences. The UGC has invited comments on the draft model syllabus from academicians and students for the consideration of the committee before finalising the syllabi. CBCS universities will be allowed to deviate a maximum of 20 per cent from the syllabi fixed by the committee.
