COIMBATORE: Officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) lifted samples from Akkamalai check dam at Valparai on Monday, based on complaints from the public about the poor quality of water supplied from the dam.
A TWAD board official, accompanied by Valparai Chairman Sathyavani Muthu, and other municipal officials, visited the dam, and lifted raw and untreated water sample.
“Even though treated water is being supplied to the public, we have taken samples to ally the fear of water pollution among the residents. The test result will be out in a couple of days,” said C Shantha Kumar, Commissioner-in-charge, Valparai municipality.
Valparai residents had complained of receiving muddy water from Akkamalai dam for the last one week. “Soon after the summer rainfall, we have been receiving black coloured water from the dam. It is unfit for consumption,” said a resident.
