VELLORE:Work on the Namma Toilet project, which has been pending for more than a year now, is likely to resume next week in Vellore.
Out of 14 sanctioned toilets, one was inaugurated on July 18, 2014 in Viruthamput and the construction of the rest was put on hold.
After repeated complaints by councillors at the Corporation meet and by officials at the Commissionarate of Municipal Administration (CMA), demanding that the work is finished, the work is likely to resume in the Fort City.
Namma Toilets are toilets maintained on a build-operate-transfer basis and are an initiative of the CMA, Government of Tamil Nadu. The initiative, announced in 2013, was taken up by a Chennai-based firm, which abandoned the project after installing a Namma Toilet in Viruthamput in zone 1 and supplying materials for five toilets in July last year.
On Friday, the firm visited the corporation office on Infantry Road and held a meeting with engineering officials. The company representatives explained the execution plan for the remaining toilets and were then asked to submit a plan of action by corporation officials.
“A bathroom and two toilets will be installed in five locations by the end of August. The rest will be completed on or before September 30,” said a representative.
Of the 14 locations, 13 come under zone 1, since it is a newly-added area under the corporation and needs to be developed. The 14th location is in zone 2, in Sathuvachari, near the Vellore Old Bus Stand.
The cost of construction of these models of toilets was estimated at Rs 11 lakh, Rs 16 lakh and Rs 27 lakh, depending on the number of toilets and bathrooms constructed. The total cost of the project in Vellore was calculated to cost around Rs 240 lakh.
