PUDUCHERRY: The government of Puducherry has decided to re-organise police sub-divisions of Puducherry region into four sub-divisions — North, East, West and South — while it has been proposed to divide Karaikal district into two sub-divisions.
According to police department sources, the existing sub-divisions of Puducherry are not territorially contiguous and some of them are spread over large areas which affect the mobility of the officers.
It is administratively inconvenient to handle critical law and order issues as population in the outlying areas has increased manifold during the past 10 years. Several new residential colonies and commercial centres have come up in these areas, the department pointed out.
The police further said that the crime rate in these areas have gone up, which requires close monitoring and effective administrative control by the supervisory officers. This necessitated the re-organisation of present three sub-divisions of Puducherry region into four subdivisions as North, East, West and South.
Similarly, the Karaikal district is proposed to be divided into two sub-divisions to be headed by SP , Karaikal (North) and SP, Karaikal (South) for better administrative control.
Some police stations have become more complex than others and it was felt that a senior officer in the rank of an inspector may exercise better supervision as Station House Officer. Therefore, the Police Department has proposed that, select police stations may be placed directly under the control of inspectors. The remaining police stations will be under the control of Sub-Inspectors of Police as Station House Officers.
The Lieutenant-Governor (in charge), Puducherry has issued notification to re-organise the police sub-divisions in public interest.
The Karaikal district will have North and South sub-divisions under the control of the two SPs. The Mahe sub-division will be under the control of the SP, Mahe while the Yanam region will be a sub-division under the control of the Superintendent of Police, Yanam.
