Karur CEO Memo on Marks Draws Teachers' Flak

MADURAI: The Karur District Chief Education Officer’s (CEO) move to serve memo on the teachers of class 10 and 12 for having produced less than 80 percent results in the recently concluded half-yearly examination has disappointed many teachers.

The CEO however, clarified that the memo has been issued only to warn the teachers who have been considered under-performers and he had no intention to punish them.

“I have been producing cent percent results from the past couple of years and hardly went below 90 percent in any year but citing 76 percent result in the half-yearly examination a few days ago, I have been issued memo,” said a teacher from a government school in Karur. “Claiming that 25 percent of the students in 9th standard in government school facing even reading problems, we have been struggling to train them  to pass the 10th board examination,” said a teacher. Issuing memo would only disappoint the teachers rather than encouraging them to produce results,” added the teacher.

“This is only half-yearly results and we do have another 55 days for the board examination. Only after the half-yearly exam, we could segregate the slow learners and give them adequate attention. Instead of issuing official warning, by sending memo we could have been called for an officials meeting and given a warning,” said another teacher.

Narrating few incidents in the recent past while claiming that teachers are working under adverse conditions, P Elangovan, State President, Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers Association, said, “Suicide by a girl after being scolded by teacher for poor academic performance in Namakkal a few days ago has sent the teacher behind bars. In another incident in Kanyakumari, political parties interfered when the students were questioned for not attending special classes during Pongal holidays. Such incidents would dare not teachers to question students but the administration is ready to take action without considering the plight of teachers,” he said.
