PUDUKKOTTAI: Three persons, including two college girls, were killed near Mimisal on Tuesday morning, when their two-wheeler hit a tipper lorry.

Sources said, one Ambika (20), daughter of Shanmugam, studying second year BBA in Alagappa College, Karaikudi, and Saraswathi (20) daughter of Pazhanivel, studying B.Sc third year in KKC College, Pudukkottai, were close friends and also relatives. Both hailed from Nattani Poovaraskudi near Mimisal.

On Tuesday morning, they came to Nattani Poovarasakudi bus stop to board a bus to Aranthangi, where from they would board buses to their respective colleges. Since they missed the bus to Aranthangi which plied via their village, they began walking to the next bus stop at Velvarai, which is located 500 metres away on the East Coast Road from their village. Just at that time, an acquaintance - one Karuppaiyah (35) son Subbaiyah, native of Kozhuvanur, passed by on a two-wheeler, and the two asked for a drop at the Kozhuvanur bus stand to catch the Aranthangi bus.

Following their request, Karuppaiyah picked them on his two-wheeler and were on their way to Kozhuvanur bus stand, when the motorcycle hit a tipper lorry proceeding to Mimisal from Aranthangi. In the impact, the three were trapped under the lorry.

Seeing this, villagers and onlookers rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them, but they all had died on the spot. The lorry driver immediately fled from the spot.

On information, police personnel rushed to spot and sent the bodies to Manamelkudi GH for postmortem. Traffic on the ECR was paralysed for a while. A case has been registered by Mimisal police. Further investigations are on.
