COIMBATORE: Though Anna University takes extra efforts by organising a bridge course in subjects like in Maths, Physics and English for the benefit of first year engineering students, it has failed to produce the desired results as students tend to take it lightly since it is not considered for their assessment.
To help engineering students cope with their first-year syllabus, Anna University introduced bridge courses the last couple of years, and were conducted before the start of the first semester. Plus-one and plus-two portions of Maths and Physics were revisited. Since the bridge course is not part of the curriculum, students do not take it seriously, said V Lakshmi Prabha, principal, Government College of Technology, Coimbatore.
“Schools are not conducting the plus-one syllabus fully. But engineering syllabus mainly focuses on plus-one syllabus. So first year engineering students face difficulty in understating Maths and Physics,” she added.
However, RS Kumar, principal of Kumaraguru College of Technology felt, “pre and post assessment should be conducted as part of the bridge course so that students will take interest in these additional courses.
