VELLORE:A 29-year-old second-grade jail warder working at the Vellore Central Prison for Men was attacked by two unidentified perpetrators in Thorapadi on Sunday evening.

Prison sources said Prem Anand, a second-grade warder, and a native of Sivaganga district, is married and lives with his wife in the prison quarters. He was walking towards the prison quarters after completing his shift at 4.30pm, when near a government school in Thorapadi, two unidentified perpetrators on a  bike attacked Prem with ‘aruval’ and knife. Prem collapsed on the spot. Commuters alerted ambulance services immediately and he was taken to the Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital(GVMCH) with severe head injuries.

A senior prison official said, Prem Anand is  part of the security team that conducts searches for mobile phones and tobacco on prison inmates. According to the official, he has seized many mobiles and several prohibited material from the inmates in the last few months.

The perpetrators probably followed him to the spot where he was attacked. “It seems an inmate, was probably nursing a grudge from the prison raids  and arranged to have him attacked. He is in critical condition in GVMCH and he may be transferred to a private hospital in Vellore by Sunday late evening,” added the official.
