COIMBATORE:Coimbatore Corporation Mayor, P Rajkumar, along with the Anna Trade Union (ATU) State Secretary, R Chinnasamy, submitted a petition to the city police commissioner, A K Viswanathan on Friday, seeking a more just system of collecting fines from auto-rickshaw drivers, who had failed to implement the fare system. Speaking to reporters, Chinnasamy said, an upward revision of fares for cities such as Coimbatore was pending before the Madras HC. Auto drivers had been claiming that the current fare rates cannot be applied to Coimbatore.
He said, a reply from the government on the issue was yet to be submitted to the court and so the Anna Trade Union hoped that police would go easy on auto drivers. He said, the ATU supported the uniform fare rates, but clarified that police would not impose ‘excessive’ fines.
Mayor, P Rajkumar said, on Thursday, AIADMK members and auto rickshaw drivers from affiliated trade unions had agreed to ferry passengers according to meter rates imposed by the government.
