VELLORE: A student of Ida Scudder School has made his alma mater and home town of Vellore proud by scoring 99 percent in the 12 standard Indian School Certificate (ISC) public examination conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate, New Delhi, the results of which were announced on Monday.

Ajay Ebenezer Sundararaj is not only the school topper, but also obtained a rank in the nationally. Speaking to Express, he said he thoroughly enjoyed his schooling, given the fact that he has always been a class topper from an early age.

Ajay scored centum in Mathematics and Biology, 99 in Chemistry, 98 in Physics and 97 in English with a total of 396 out of 400. The total is calculated on the basis of marks scored in English and the three top scoring subjects.

Asked about the secret of his success, he said, “I study two to three hours a day after coming back from school. I read and re-read the chapters learnt in school,” he said.

School Principal, Renita Muthusamy, said that Ajay has made the school proud. Ajay’s mother Angeline Ebenezer works as a physics teacher in the same school while his father Ebenezer Sundararaj is the general superintendent at the Christian Medical College hospital (CMC). He said that he did not face any pressure from his parents or teachers to do well. “My teachers were more than helpful,” he noted. Ajay scored 98.2 per cent in his 10th standard examination to claim second rank, at the national level.

“You don’t need to be a topper to succeed in life. Life is a test match and not a T20 match. Whatever you do, do it with passion and full involvement,” he said, offering advice to fellow students.

While Ajay is preparing to appear for the entrance examinations for admission to IIT and CMC, he is open to taking up any courses that come his way. For further studies, however, his first choice, as of now, remains medicine.
