CHENNAI: A 40-year-old AIADMK functionary was hacked to death in Ayanavaram on Saturday night. Police said Ravi alias ‘Auto’ Ravi, (40), a resident of Kuttiappan street, was returning home after attending a local temple festival around 11 pm, when a duo attacked and killed him. The deceased was party secretary of 98th ward of Chennai Corporation.
25 Sovereigns Stolen
A pawn-broker lost 25 sovereign gold from his shop in Kanathur on Saturday, to a thief posing as a customer who made away with the loot after rendering the pawn broker unconscious by sprinkling some powder in his face.
Police said Mahesh Kumar (37), who ran a pawn- shop at Reddy Kuppam in Kanathur, was visited by a man in his mid-30s, wearing a cap, asking for lucky stones. The man initially purchased gemstones and requested that he be shown gold chain designs which Mahesh Kumar fetched from the safe room. Then the customer asked for a nose ring which he purchased for Rs 300. Mahesh, who passed out after that, woke up after sometime and reviewed the CCTV footage which showed that the customer had sprinkled some powder on the pawn-broker’s face. The gold chains were missing.
2 killed in Hit-n-run
Two persons of Meyyur village near Chengalpet, who were on a motorcycle, were fatally knocked down by a speeding car on Chengalpet bypass when the duo were commuting to work on Saturday morning. The injured duo, Ravi (43) and Loganathan (41) were rushed to Chengalpet Government Hospital where the doctors declared them dead on arrival.
House burgled
Burglars targeted a government employee’s house and decamped with 60 sovereign gold and Rs 8,000 in cash when the inmates of the house were away on a pilgrimage. The incident happened in Chengalpet and came to light when Madan (45), his wife Jaya Rani (42) and daughter Julie (17), returned after their Velankanni pilgrimage to offer prayers for the latter’s good results in the SSLC examination. The family found that their balcony door had been forced open.
Ilayaraja’s petition on copyright issue
Chennai: Music composer Ilayaraja sent another petition to senior police officials asking them to take action against those using songs composed by him without his consent, as per the Madras High Court’s injunction. In a press note issued on Saturday, the composer said he had also sent a letter to popular FM station ‘Radio Mirchi’ to stop broadcasting the popular late night program ‘Neenga, Naa, Raja Sir.’
