CHENNAI:A young woman, who was allegedly having an affair with a man from the neighbourhood, was attacked with acid by his wife, in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar on Saturday afternoon.
Yuvarani, the 25-year-old victim, was immediately rushed to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, while the attacker Kumudam (38), her husband Tamilvanan (45) and his mother Saroja were taken into custody by the police much later in the day.
Police said Yuvarani became friends with Kumudam, who lived on the same road, Gandhi Street, and used to frequent her home. She allegedly became close to her husband, Tamilvanan, a construction worker.
Police said Kumudam learnt about the affair and warned them both.
However, the two apparently continued the relationship. On Saturday around 1 pm, as Yuvarani was walking down the road speaking on the mobile phone she came under an unexpected attack by Kumudam. After assaulting and leaving her on the ground, Kumudam went into her house, returned with a bottle of toilet cleaning acid and splashed it on Yuvarani. Police said Yuvarani suffered burns to her face, ears, chest and arms.
Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to KMC Hospital where she has now been admitted. However, it took intimation from the personnel posted there for the local police to receive information about the matter. Later in the day, Tamilvanan, Kumudam and his mother were picked up for questioning.
