Heavy Rains Lash Nagercoil District

NAGERCOIL:Continuous heavy rains lashed the district throughout the night on Saturday with Nagercoil receiving the maximum of 68 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Beginning from Saturday night heavy rains along with thunder storm lashed the district and it continued throughout the night. In the last 24 hours Nagercoil recorded the maximum of 68 millimeters and Perunchani recorded the minimum of 1.8 millimeters of rainfall. Low lying areas in Nagarcoil town were inundated. As most of the drains in the town were clogged by heaps of garbage and silt, sewage water mixed with rain water flooded roads in many areas in the town.

Major rivers including Pazhayar, Kuzhithurai Thamirabarani, Paraliyaru and Valliyaru and their streams were flooded.

Catchment areas of all the dams in the district are brimming. As on Sunday, Pechippaarai dam had a water level of 40.78 against its capacity of 48 feet. Perunchani dam had a water level of 71.58 feet against its capacity of 71.58 feet. Chittaar I and II dams had a water level of 16.30 feet and 16.40 feet against its capacity of 18 feet. Mambazhathuraiyar dam had a water level of 54.12 feet against its capacity of 55 feet.
