This is not the first time Stalin is facing the cameras. In 1987, he acted in a film Ore Ratham, penned by his father and DMK leader M Karunanidhi. The film which did not succeed at the box office was a successful drama. Stalin played the role of a revolutionary youth who gets murdered by a group of anti-social and reactionary elements.
Later, he acted in a Doordarshan serial titled Kurinji Malar, which was widely watched by viewers, and Stalin became a household name. His elder brother M K Muthu acted in several films penned by the DMK leader. Despite the success of the films, he did not sustain himself as an actor for various reasons.
Karunanidhi himself was a drama actor and one of the best script writers in Tamil cinema, giving numerous box office hits in the fifties and sixties.
He appeared in the screen too to deliver the prologue of the story in Poompuhar, the film version of Tamil epic Silappadhikaram. When he made a comeback in the eighties with Palavaina Pookkal and went on give a few more hit films, he continued with the practice of introducing the script to the audience. Stalin’s son Udhyanidhi Stalin is a film producer and has acted in a few successful movies.
