Helen Keller of Kovai Fights all Odds, Becomes Miracle worker

COIMBATORE: Next time you visit the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, do not miss the woman who issues you the OP ticket. Her dark glasses suit her perfectly. But you would find it impossible to believe that she is visually challenged, especially given her dexterity with the computer keyboard.

Meet Selvarani Saravanakumar (33), from Singanalloor, whose life stands as an example to encourage those who collapse completely when they face small problems in life. Born blind, Selvarani was not ready to leave her life to ever-uncharted destiny. She fought hard against all odds to become the role model that she is today. A Helen Keller of Coimbatore indeed!

Having been born blind, the colourful world of vision was foreign to her. Her parents motivated her to see the world through words of vision since her childhood. With sheer will power she completed MA BEd using Braille and became the first post graduate in her family.

“Even though I was blind my parents talked to me like a person who could see the world with the eyes. It was a little difficult in the beginning but now I don’t find any problem in doing anything,” said Selvarani.

After finishing studies she went through a training programme in Chennai and even worked at a Special Education School, Sulur.

After working there for a few years, she has got placed at the CMCH as a junior assistant and worked there for a year. It was a few months back that she was transferred to the OP Counter. The secret behind her success is hardwork and constant practice.
