Efforts on to Reduce Custodial Deaths: Jaya

CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday assured that the State government would take precautionary steps to prevent custodial deaths in TN.

Responding to the remark of K Arumugam (CPI) during the discussion on the demands for grants for Police Department in the State Assembly, the CM said the number of custodial deaths had come down after the AIADMK government assumed office in May 2011. 

She said after May 2011, four custodial deaths occurred and six during 2012 and in 2013, 15 deaths took place. While in 2014, there were eight deaths,  during the current year, three such deaths had taken place.

‘No Attack on MLAs’

On the charge of CPM floor leader A Soundararajan that his party MLA K Balakrishnan was attacked while staging a protest on September 2, the CM said Balakrishnan laid down on road and blocked the traffic. After many requests, police had to physically remove him from the road. “The police did not attack the MLA”, she said.

‘25 pc Demos Held’

On another charge of Soundararajan that the police had been denying permission for staging demonstrations for genuine causes, the CM said according a study by the Central organisation, 25 per cent of the demonstrations in the country took place in TN alone.

Crimes on Seniors

Jayalalithaa said during last year, 2,121 cases were registered on crimes against senior citizens in the State.
