COIMBATORE:  The Coimbatore District police filed a chargesheet on Tuesday against the three people accused of kidnapping and murdering 15-year-old M Dhanalakshmi in 2007.

The follows a report in the Express that two of the three accused had come out on bail due to the delay in filing the chargesheet.

The police have confirmed that they officially filed the chargesheet in the Judicial Magistrate Court in Coimbatore on Tuesday. The three men, who were arrested on December 19 last year, have been charged with kidnap, murder and destruction of evidence.

Speaking to Express, Superintendent of Police M Sudhakar clarified that filing a chargesheet is a long process which involves collating and corroborating evidence. It was the culmination of meticulous efforts made over a some time.

Also, officers connected with the case drew attention to the tremendous effort the police made to ensure that the case is brought to trial.

“The victim had been reported missing since 2007. If it were not for the efforts of the SP and other officials to reopen and investigate the case, those involved would have got away with impunity,” said an inspector involved in the investigation.

However, it was accepted that the police can be apportioned some blame for not filing the chargesheet within the stipulated 90-day period which enabled two of the three accused to get bail.
