
CHENNAI: A total of 42 police personnel have been injured in stone pelting incident in Ambur Town after a large gathering of Muslim youth, who were protesting the alleged custodial death of 26 yrs-old Sameelbasha, turned hostile on Saturday night.
The protesters attacked the police personnel with sharp weapons. Ambur Mla Askam Basha reportedly instigated the protesters to attack the police. He is absconding. Of them, four police personnel have sustained serious injuries. They were admitted to the CMC hospital in Vellore, while others have been admitted in GHs in Ambur and Vellore.

ADGP T K Rajendran, senior police officials and revenue officials are camping in Ambur to clamp down the simmering tension.
Police source said that Ambur Dsp Ganeshan's vehicle, a two wheeler and a bus stationed near Ambur Taluk Station were set on fire. So far, 147 persons have been arrested in connection with incident.
