MUMBAI:  In an attempt to consolidate details of students and keep a tab on them, government is planning to allot a 14-digit unique ID to class 10 and 12 students from this year.

The unique ID would provide details of the district in which the student is appearing for the exam, year and month of the exam and whether the student is appearing as a regular or a private candidate.

Commenting on this initiative, Joint Director (Personnel) of Examinations, C Amuthavalli said that the unique ID would help avoid confusion when consolidated mark sheets are distributed to students, who have appeared for supplementary examinations. “This unique ID would be helpful in tracking the students as it would be printed in the consolidated mark sheets. It would also be printed in the main sheet of the answer booklet during board examinations,” pointed out Amuthavalli.

The JD further said, “The ID would have details, such as the standard in which the student is studying, in roman letters, month of the examination (‘M’ - March), whether the student is a regular or private candidate (‘R’ ( regular) or ‘P’ (private), year of the examination (for e.g. - ‘16’ -(2016), code allotted for the education district from where the student is appearing for the examination  and a seven-digit number starting from ‘10, 00, 001’. Adding all these, the 14-digit unique code would be like ‘XMR16011000001’.”

She said that the ID would be updated online and students can access all details through the  ID. This system would be would be very helpful in tracking them even after several years, she added.

She said that a total of 10,23,538 students would appear for class 10 board exam in the state during the academic year 2015-16.
