COIMBATORE: Hundreds of bird watchers from across the country are expected to join over one lakh global bird enthusiasts as a part of the annual Great Backyard Bird Count starting this Friday.

The basic activity is to list all bird species seen in a particular location over a period of 15 minutes or more, at any time during the four days, and upload the list on to the global bird recording platform  www.ebird.org/india. This exercise helps to know about the distribution of birds in the country and predict changes in the nature.

A number of events are being planned around GBBC 2016. Around 150 colleges are taking part in the Campus Bird Count, which is an effort to document birds. “Several birds have made their homes in campuses,” says P Jeganathan, member, Tamil Birders Group .
