CHENNAI: In a big relief to students of controversial SVS Medical College of Yoga and Naturopathy in Villupuram district, where three girl students were recently found dead, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced that the students of the college would be accommodated in the yoga and naturopathy college run by the State government so that continuation of their education would not be affected in any way.
As far as homoeopathy students are concerned, approval of Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Central government would be required for accommodating them in other homoeopathy colleges, she said and directed officials to take immediate steps to get the necessary permission for this.
Tracing the origin of the issue, the Chief Minister said the previous DMK regime had given permission for starting SVS Medical College of Yoga and Naturopathy on April 3, 2008, and to admit 50 students.
Based on this, the MGR Medical University accorded ‘provisional affiliation’ to the college on May 26, 2009, for 2008-09. Since then, the university had been giving ‘continuous provisional affiliation’ till 2014-15.
The application seeking affiliation for the year 2015-16 is under consideration of the MGR Medical University.
Again, on February 28, 2011, the DMK regime had given No Objection Certificate to the college to start homoeopathy degree course with 50 students. However, the Central government had rejected it. Following this, the SVS Education and Social Service Trust moved the Madras High Court and based on these cases, the Centre had, on September 28, 2015, approved commissioning of the homoeopathy degree course in the college.
Further, on the orders of the Madras High Court, the MGR Medical University had given affiliation to the homoeopathy course for the years 2014-15 and 2015-16.
