SIRUKULAM: Vexed with harassment for dowry by her techie husband, a married woman, a software professional herself, staged a hunger strike in front of her in-law's house at Palasa on Sunday. However, the
family members had locked the house and left prior to her protest.
P Soumya, a B Tech graduate from Vizianagaram, married Malla Chiranjeevi Santosh of Palasa on June 7 last year and her parents had given Rs 13 lakh in cash, 4 kg silver and 24 tola gold as dowry.
Being both B Tech graduates, the couple took up jobs in Bengaluru and shifted there after marriage.
A few days latter, Santosh started pestering Soumya for additional dowry. The couple had heated arguments over the issue several times.
Unable to bear the harassment by her husband, Soumya returned to her parents' house just 40 days after the marriage.
"I lodged a complaint at the women police station in Srikakulam. But, the police have not taken any action so far.
That's why I decided to stage a hunger strike," she said.
Srikakulam women police station DSP Subramanyam said that they could not pursue the case as it does not come under the women police stations limits.
Meanwhile, Palasa SI P Sreeram Murthy went to the spot and spoke to Soumya. He advised her to register a police complaint, but the woman refused to do the same and continued her protest till the last report came in.
