TIRUCHY: In a tragic accident, multiple vehicles including a private engineering college bus collided near Tiruchy on Thursday early morning. Five persons, including four women were killed on the spot with 17 others, including a 11-month-old baby, are being treated at the Tiruchy KAPV Medical College Hospital.
According to police sources, S Chandrasekar (31) of Kamaraj Nagar in Thathagapatti in Salem district and family members were on their way to Thirukkadaiyur temple, to celebrate the ‘Shasti Poorthi’ of his parents A Selvam (60) and S Maheswari, travelling in a tempo-traveller driven by S Ramarajan (30). Chandrasekar’s wife C Anitha (28), their daughter C Swasha (11-months) and relatives S Sheela (55), M Tharani (45), R Meheshwari (40), M Sudharsan (22), S Venkateshbabu (39), S Bavya (26), R Gopalakrishnan (65) and Matheshwaran (25) were also in the tempo.
When the tempo approached Manjakarai near Aamur on Tiruchy - Salem Highway, Ramarajan had attempted to overtake a car that was proceeding to Nagore in Nagapattinam district from Salem. This led to a head-on collision with a private engineering college bus that was heading in the opposite direction.
Under the impact, Selvam’s wife Maheswari, Sheela, Tharini and another Maheswari and driver Ramarajan succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Others sustained injuries.
Haja Sherif (30), his wife H Mazootha (27) and their children Nisha and Yasin who were travelling in the car proceeding to Nagore sustained minor injuries. Five others who were with them were not hurt. They were on the way to participate in the Kandhoori festival in Nagore.
