CHENNAI: The intelligence wing of the Tamil Nadu police had alerted Kerala about the possibility of bomb blasts a week ahead of Tuesday’s explosion in Malappuram district, a senior intelligence officer told Express.
The alert, he said, was sent to both the Kerala police and the Union government’s intelligence agencies.
A low-intensity bomb went off under a car parked in the collectorate of Kerala’s Malappuram district on Tuesday. Fortunately, no one was injured, though a few cars parked nearby were damaged.
A note recovered from the spot attributed the blast to “BASE movement”, which intelligence officials claim is a terror organisation that was responsible for a few bomb blasts in South India.
The intelligence officer said the alert included possible bomb blasts in a few cities in Tamil Nadu.
An official belong to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) also said that the hunt was on for the “BASE movement” since threat letters were delivered to a few Central prisons in the State last October mentioned this movement. But beyond the anonymous letters and notes, no substantial material has been recovered so far that is tied to the “BASE movement”.
Police sources said since April, five bomb blast, including the recent Malappuram incident, were reported in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh (2), Karnataka (2) and Kerala (1).
