SIVAGANGA:The family members of a mentally retarded woman, who was rescued on Saturday with multiple stitches on her body, have voiced the suspicion that her organs may have been stolen during the time that she had been missing from home.
A mentally retarded woman, Kovai Selvi (30) of Thamarakki, had been missing from home since August. On Saturday, one of the villagers found her at the Periyar Bus Terminus in Madurai and took her back to the village. Currently, Selvi is undergoing treatment at the Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital.
After her husband abandoned her and their son, Selvi has been living in Thamarakki. A source said Selvi had gone missing from her home somewhere between August 12 and 15. “When she came back, we found multiple stitches on her body. We suspect that her organs may have been stolen,” said Thamarakki Village Panchayat president K Kaviarasu.
A senior hospital official said they were yet to confirm whether her organs have been stolen. Admitting that there were stitches on Selvi’s body, the official said it looked as if life-saving operations had been performed on her.
An official from the Sivaganga Town Police station said that no complaint has been lodged by Selvi’s family.
