Ex-MLA in Rs 1.6 crore tax soup

PUDUCHERRY: Income tax officials found nearly Rs1.6 crore during a search of former MLA A John Kumar’s house at Nellithope on Saturday.

At a press meet on Sunday, John Kumar, who had earlier represented Nellithope constituency, said that he fully cooperated with the IT officials who came from Chennai.

“As I had sold a piece of land for Rs1.6 crore a few days ago, I did not have any documents with me. The officials asked me to submit the documents on September 28 to get the money back,” he said.

John Kumar said that he was doing several businesses ranging from a cable TV operation to real estate. He had paid income tax accordingly.

John Kumar resigned the MLA post on Thursday to pave way for the Chief Minister V Narayanasamy to contest in the by-election from the constutuency which is considered safe. “I did not resign for money. I will work for the victory of the Chief Minister in Nellithope,” he said.
