MADURAI: Jallikattu protests spread wider in Tamil Nadu with hundreds of college students assembling at the Thamukkam grounds in Madurai to demand the release of youngsters arrested for organizing the sport at Alanganallur. Students from several colleges, including a good number of girls, joined the protest later in the morning.
One student, R Jennifer said she joined the protest because bull taming was a part of Tamil Nadu’s culture. She had learnt of the protest on social media. She said she decided to skip her internal exam to join the protest.
One of the personalities present at the demo was Durai Dayanidhi, son of M K Alagiri. He said he was not representing any political party. “The central government has not supported any issue of the Tamil people including Jallikattu. It’s a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu, and the central government should pass an ordinance immediately allowing it.”
Film director Gowthaman was among those who joined the protest in the morning.
Cheers went up as youngsters streamed into the ground in Madurai to join the demo. The roads were barricaded by the police near Thamukkam.
