CHENNAI: A group of college students visited Nadukuppam on Friday, on a fact-finding mission, to ascertain the damage suffered by slum dwellers during the violence on January 23.
About 20 students, on behalf of All TN Student Association, visited the fishing village and interacted with residents. Siva Chandran, an MA student of Madras University and a member of the association, said they wanted to visit the fishermen, who had supported the student-led jallikattu agitations. On January 23, when police attempted to clear protestors from Marina, a few of them sought shelter in these slums that reportedly forced police to take action.
Based on the interaction they had with 120 families, Chandran said, “Residents allege it was the police which attacked the vehicles and shops. Besides, residents also said police entered their houses and damaged property. The locals also claimed the women were verbally abused.” Meanwhile, a group of IT employees working in Chennai has planned to visit the place on Saturday.
