COIMBATORE: A 17-year-old girl who had just completed her Plus Two committed suicide here on Saturday, as she did not score the marks as she expected.
P Thamaraiselvi, who studied in a private school at Mayileripalayam near Othakalmandapam, had scored 1,088 marks, but she expected more than 1,100, which she felt was needed to get an engineering seat. Her father K Palanisamy works as a driver in the school.
Around 12.30 pm on Saturday, her mother found Thamaraiselvi hanging and raised an alarm. Though the girl was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, doctors declared her brought dead.
A police official said she was expecting more marks. “As she belongs to a poor family, she wanted to get a seat in the merit quota for engineering or science course. She thought this would be possible only if she scored more than 1,100 marks,” the official told Express.
The girl had been depressed for the last two days, said a relative. “We had assured her that she will get college admission. But she was not convinced. Her friends had scored 1,150 marks, which made her even more depressed. Even if she had scored lower marks, we would have found her a seat for a course of her liking,” the relative said.
