ERODE: Students who escaped from the police caning at Marina Beach on Monday alleged that the police did not permit them to disperse peacefully after discussing the ordinance on Jallikattu. The request for some more time was denied by the police, who used force to make the protestors disperse, they said.

They told Express that the so-called leaders deserted them without explaining their stand on the issue to the protestors.

They refused to comment on the call given by the leaders like Kangayam Bull Research Centre Trust president Karthigeya Sivasenapathy, Jallikattu Peravai president  Rajasekaran, film musician Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi to postpone the stir till March 31 as the ordinance, they claimed, ensured 100 per cent victory to the stir.

The students said that the government failed to explain the gathered crowd about the ordinance and the validity of the same and refused to hold talks with them. Their demand for a permanent solution by amending the PCA Act and imposing a ban on PETA was not acknowledged by the Centre and the State, they rued.

There is no guarantee that the same tempo can be maintained after three months as the present ordinance and Act on Jallikattu does not ensure a permanent solution, they said. They cited this as the reason for their refusal to withdraw the protests.

They alleged that despite their peaceful means, unfortunately, the police turned violent ignoring all democratic principles.

The students, however, expressed skepticism over the ordinance and the proposed Act on Jallikattu. They demanded a judicial probe on the police caning incident and stern action on cops who indulged in the violence deliberately while the students were protesting peacefully all the seven days. This kind of attack on students is unheard of in the history of TN, they added.
